Sherman Winthrop, 74, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, of St. Paul passed away on June 6, 2005. Sherman was born in Duluth, Minn., in 1931. He graduated from the University of Minnesota, BBA, with distinction. He went on to Harvard Law School and received his JD in 1955. He clerked for Chief Justice Roger L. Dell of the Supreme Court, State of Minnesota. He joined Oppenheimer, Wolff & Donnelly as an associate attorney in 1956. Sherman was a founding partner of the law firm Winthrop and Weinstine. P.A., which he and his partners founded in 1979. He will be deeply missed by his family, Firm, colleagues and clients. Sherman was known to everyone as a gentlemanly lawyer. Sherman was revered and respected not only for his judgment and legal acumen, but for his ability to lead and mentor his fellow lawyers. Sherman will be honored as a 50-year Senior Counselor by the Minnesota State Bar Association in a few weeks at a special ceremony in June. Sherman was indeed a leader in the business community for more than 50 years. His dedication to his clients and the legal profession have made him an inspiration to countless attorneys and business professionals. Not only did Sherman counsel some of the state's top companies, he made numerous friends along the way. His practice focused in the area of general business law with an emphasis on banking law, general corporate law, securities, real estate and estate planning. He was behind some of the region's most important mergers and acquisitions. Sherman was always active in his profession, and served on the Minnesota Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board from 1976-1982. He also served in 1981 on the Executive Counsel of the Ramsey County Bar Association and was chairman of the Executive Section of the Business law Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association in 1992. Sherman has been consistently recognized in The Best Lawyers in America, a leading publication of top lawyers. Sherman was a member of American Bar Association, Minnesota State Bar Association, Hennepin County Bar Association and Ramsey County Bar Association. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Bremer Financial Corporation, Board of Directors of St. Paul Progress Corporation, Board of Directors of Capital City Partners, and the Minnesota Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board. Sherman's community involvement included past board member of St. Paul Rehabilitation Center, St. Paul Athletic Club, Mt. Zion Temple, Sholom Home, and Friends of the St. Paul Public Library. Today Sherman's legacy at Winthrop and Weinstine reflects a firm culture that cultivates the mutual respect the firm has for every lawyer and staff member, and provides a stimulating work environment that is professional, informal and friendly. He will always remain in everyone's heart as the consummate professional and a good caring man. Preceded in death by parents, George and Mary Winthrop. Survived by wife of 49 years, Barbara Jo Cowan Winthrop; children, Susan Crist and husband, Michael Crist of Longmont, Colo., sons Bradley Thomas Winthrop and wife, Pamela of Rosemount, Minn., and Douglas Andrew Winthrop and wife, Yamilee Bermingham of San Francisco, Calif.; grandchildren, Joshua Aaron Crist and Brandon Lee Crist (Susan and Michael) and Zadie Marie Winthrop (Douglas and Yamilee); brothers Edward of Leawood, Kan., and Harvey of Duluth, Minn.
